There are natural consequences that accompany every choice we make in life. Some opportunities inevitably pass us by, but we can take advantage of others. Many people feel powerless, but this is rarely the case--some opportunities just require a little thinking outside the box. Today, reflect on the doors you are opening in your world and which ones are closing. You have the power to create the life you want if you are willing to set goals and take steps toward them. Rarely does fulfilling our hopes and dreams happen overnight, but you can take one tiny move towards them each day.

by Lady Anne Lytton
(reprinted from The Arabian Horse Journal, August 1963, Vol. 6, No. 2)
Appearing in The Crabbet Influence Spring-Summer 1998 issue
As a small child the names of my great-greatgrandfather Byron, the poet, my great-grandfather Bulwer Lytton, the novelist, left me strangely unimpressed; but the mention of MESAOUD, PHAROAH, SHERIFA, QUEEN OF SHEBA and others was quite a different story.

The mare's secret code of honor is as old as horses themselves and is ultimately the species best kept secret. No mare shall ever produce a foal before it's time.(It's time being determined by the following factors):
1. No foal shall be born until total chaos has been reached by all involved. Your house must be a wreck, your family hungry and desperate for clean clothes, and your social life nonexistent.

~ I Ride ~
That seems like such a simple statement. However, as many women who ride know, it is really a complicated matter. It has to do with power and empowerment. Being able to do things you might have once considered out of reach or ability. I have considered this as I shovel manure, fill water barrels in the cold rain, wait for the vet/farrier/ electrician/ hay delivery, change a tire on a horse trailer by the side of the freeway, or cool a gelding out before getting down to the business of drinking a cold beer after a long ride.

Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth – we learned this in school. Dorothy McKellar coined it nicely – “I love a sun burnt country, a land of drought and flooding rains.” Australia has always experienced drought cycles and in fact usually there is some part of the country in drought at any given time.
Unfortunately at the moment the flooding rains are only coming to the very north of the country – not a traditional farming area due to the climate there and the distance from the rest of the country, major ports and most of the population.

I was lucky enough to attend the 2007 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show held annually in February in Scottsdale Arizona USA with a small group of fellow Aussies. The show, which runs over 10 days, and this year had over 800 classes with more than 2,500 entries and more than one million dollars in prizemoney is a highlight on the calendar of Scottsdale and conservatively estimated to inject over thirty-five million dollars into the local community each year.

On Tuesday evening we attended the Cedar Ridge Arabian Select Sale 11 at Cedar Ridge’s Scottsdale location situated on a couple of acres in the heart of suburbia – their winter training stables with stalls, work areas and horsewalkers. Part of the large arena was covered with a huge marquee and a long raised stage had been set up inside this tent to display the sale horses. Waiters wandered the tent with complimentary glasses of local wines throughout the evening.
